History of Granbury Masonic Lodge No. 392

Granbury Masonic Lodge No. 392 was chartered on June 9, 1874, by the Most Worshipful Grand Lodge of Texas.

It is often said that Masonic District No. 65 originally consisted of five lodges:

• Acton Lodge No. 285
• Granbury Lodge No. 392
• Jubilee Lodge
• Paluxy Lodge No. 393
• Bluff Dale Lodge No. 724

Grand Lodge records indicate that when Granbury Lodge No. 392 received its charter in 1874, only one firmly established lodge existed in Hood County—Acton Lodge No. 285. Acton Lodge was originally chartered in 1858 and later re-chartered in 1866, making it the first Masonic lodge established in Hood County.

Acton Lodge No. 285 met on the second floor of the schoolhouse in Acton, a building constructed by the Masons. The school occupied the first floor, while the lodge met on the second. This arrangement was common throughout the late 1800s and early 1900s, as many Masonic buildings were two-story structures with the lower floor serving as a school, general store, or community gathering place.

Grand Lodge records further indicate that Acton Lodge No. 285 demised in 1922. That same year, Jubilee Lodge merged with Granbury Lodge No. 392. In 1943, Paluxy Lodge No. 393 merged with Bluff Dale Lodge No. 724. Today, Granbury Lodge No. 392 is the only lodge in Hood County that remains part of Masonic District No. 65.

Although Grand Lodge records do not specify where Granbury Lodge No. 392 met during its earliest years, they do indicate that the lodge has always been located in Granbury. There is speculation that, during its formative years, Granbury Lodge may have shared a lodge room with Acton Lodge No. 285 until a permanent meeting place was established.

For many years, Granbury Lodge No. 392 was located at 122½ North Crockett Street on the Historic Granbury Square (and is now a retail store). The lodge later relocated to its present home at 1700 Weatherford Highway (Highway 51).

Granbury Lodge No. 392 is under the jurisdiction of the Most Worshipful Grand Lodge of Texas and is a member of Masonic District No. 65, which includes:

• Glen Rose Lodge No. 525
• Granbury Lodge No. 392
• Milsap Lodge No. 1265
• Olive Branch Lodge No. 792
• Phoenix Lodge No. 275

Although Charity Lodge No. 565 is located in Lipan, Texas (also in Hood County), it belongs to Masonic District No. 113.

Meetings

Granbury Lodge No. 392 holds Called Meetings on Monday evenings as needed. Dinner is served at 6:30 p.m., with lodge opening at 7:30 p.m. The lodge’s Stated Meeting is held on the first Thursday of each month, with dinner at 6:30 p.m. and the meeting beginning at 7:30 p.m.

When no official degree work or other lodge business is scheduled, Masonic ritual (floor work) instruction and practice are conducted following dinner on Called Meeting nights. Additional ritual workshops may also be held at 5:30 p.m. on weekdays, as needed. Practice dates are announced during Called Meetings.
